Let The Good Times Roll

While what is left of the manufacturing industry in the UK continues to suffer and taxes continue to rise, the boom area of late has been housing and construction. This in turn has led to a boom for the Skip Hire industry which while only a small part of the industry, has attracted much interest.

The sector has also received attention from both European and UK regulators who have introduced a number of Health and Safety and Waste Management regulations, adding further to the industry’s cost base. While not totally unexpected, this increased cost has forced many smaller companies to seek extra funding, with a number taking out Commercial Mortgages.

It seems that the insurance industry has also been alerted to the potential for squeezing extra funding from the industry, and insurance premiums have shown a marked rise. Companies have been forced to look at extra safety and security measures including Skip locks, Skip lights, Skip nets and Skip ramps to name but a few. Safety Clothing has also been improved, with many projects carried out into the evening and darkness, resulting in a need for increased visibility of personnel.

Many may be surprised to learn that “green” issues are having a major impact on the operation of Skip Hire companies, with simple land fill disposal no longer available on mass. There are certain tax implications and benefits to recycling as much waste as possible, although this is becoming less and less of an option - more a necessity.

As a consequence of waste disposal sites becoming less and less available, Screen Trommels are becoming more noticeable - enabling waste material to be sorted on size for recycling and disposal. These items are not cheap, and represent a significant investment for the future - a future which looks more and more uncertain for many of the smaller groups.
